My thoughts on the ranks:
I think that there needs to be a distinction between bought ranks vs. build ranks. (Note: I'm not trying to take anything away from ppl that have bought ranks, i know they have contributed by either donating real $ or earning rickies in game.) As a builder, my ultimate goal is the highest rank possible. And I want my rank to mean something to other builders. Currently there is no way to determine if someone got their rank with a build or a buy. At this point in time that rank is unattainable because most, if not all of those ranks (LC) have been filled. I'm not real sure why there is a limit on this rank. If someone builds something that is worthy why would they not get it? just because the "quota" has been filled? I may not even ever build something that's worthy of LC, but I still think that if anyone builds something deserving that they should get it. And I strongly believe there should be something designating built or bought. I'm not sure how to do this. I don't think they need to be totally different ranks, maybe just some kind of symbol similar to the <3, that designates how the rank was acquired.

This won't ever happen.
The LC, Legendary Crafter rank was meant to be exclusive on purpose. There was only ever to be 5 LC's due to the ranks cost ($100) and it's abilities (/time and /weather control on Survival).
It isn't my fault that the rank was purchased 4 times but that money did help the server with costly upgrades and part replacements. The Epic Crafter rank was introduced to increase the amount of slots to 15 and take away some of the abilities that LC's had so it didn't feel like they were short changed. LC is still the highest level rank.
Epic Crafter again it's super expensive to buy with in-game currency and we no longer accept dollar donations. Having very expensive ranks as we do (in-game currency expensive I mean) gives players a reason to play the economy, make shops, vote and so on. Without these top end ranks to shoot for some people will see Rickies as worthless.
Now about the distinction between buying and earned, I think it is fair to say that if users were labelled in some way that they bought their rank they would be treated differently by those who "earned" it through building. I've seen people act that way to some of our players even without such labelling and I'd prefer to keep it neutral.
Besides paying real money, in-game money or earning the rank all helps the server the same amount they all deserve the rank they got based on the way they earned it. Real donations kept the server up to date and secured our future, in-game purchasers help keep the economy strong and makes the server better for players and those who build illustrate their talent to potential new players and keep existing players engaged following other players build progress.

Still waiting on PvP ranks lol.
Besides that, the idea of buying ranks can be good for the reason I always emphasize, diversity. Having people compete for the same ranks but by different ways (currency or building) will allow multiple ways to reach the same goal. If somebody was to lack at one skill, and that was the only way to achieve something, it would be very unfair and bias. Having the same rank for two different possibilities shows that they are still equals of their own skill, not showing any bias to one or the other skill. If you want somebody to know you got a rank just tell them. For example, I always emphasize how I earned director through a video if the subject comes up.
