Security Updates

Fri May 06, 2011 6:01 pm

Today the room was down for about two and a half hours while I did some changes to our server here is an outline of what those were.

Changes that required downtime to be implemented:
1. RAM bumped back to 24GB (Received replacement for the dead RAM today)
2. Brought us up to date with the latest Windows Updates
3. Updated our Webserver, VNC, PHP, MySQL, VMWare, FTP, TrueCrypt and so on (Mostly for security)
4. Began using inbound/outbound 2008 R2 Firewall

Some other recent changes which were made that did not require reboots:
5. We are now blocking China and Russia from accessing our server due to hacking attempts
6. Our database is now using salted hashes for ALL user data
7. TrueCrypt encryption use on our virtual disks has been improved
8. All our room passwords were recently changed (Standard practice)
9. New RCS server released which is not affected by the recent MX Attacks
10. We now use a 'Phantom' room which redirects users to our main room. It's like a lobby which makes sure the user connecting isn't a proxy.

You may wonder why I've made some of these, did we have a security breach of some kind? - No. Our server has always been rock solid and we've not had any kind of security breach but there has been many attempts and I felt with the recent lets say "popularity" we have been gaining I felt it prudent to update our security. Better safe than sorry. Also I'm going away for a while soon so I wanted to give the room a great foundation to deal with any threats that might come up during my absence.
