Moz's hole lot of trouble

Mon Mar 28, 2016 10:36 pm

I'm posting this mainly to give myself some motivation to keep building and also just cos it's a big thing and people like them. Stupid ex gf. At this point I do have a few ideas for where this might go but nothing definite yet. Anyway I'll update this each week, set myself some goals for the week and if I'm lucky I might hit a few of them along the way, so here goes.

Week 1 aka "How I learned to hate sponge"
Week 1 Goals - Plot out shape, lay down walls, drain water. Easy right? Right?!

I was bored and thought "what I need in my life is an enormous circular hole" cos well circles in a game of squares are just plain cool. For some reason I thought 275 diameter would be a nice size (really no idea why) so I plotted in on mineconics and started stringing together some stone in an area near my town spawn.

Image

That was surprisingly easy.

Image

By this point I was starting to question the people who came up with sponge.

Image

By now I'm just questioning my own sanity.

Image

I never want to see a sponge block again, but it's done! About 1.5million water blocks sucked up by around 25000 placed sponges. It felt like sooo many more than that.

Week 2 Goals - Start digging. I want to take the floor down to layer 10 and the floor averages around layer 38 atm so lots of shovel and pick action. 1 layer is around 58k blocks so I'm going to aim for 2 layers per day, 116k blocks per day should get me done in about 2 weeks hopefully if I don't hit too many problems irl. The goal for this week, make it down to layer 20, then I should be in good shape to hit my target of layer 10 by the end of the following week. Btw if anyone has a use for 58k gravel, I can probably help.

After seeing this...accomplishment(?) of great tediousness, my tedious work of making a two hundred something by one hundred something large pixel art by hand seems less tedious...Maybe I should make a bigger one next time I'm on break...

Oh yeah. nice pun there

So many things about holes this week, first it becomes Gray's pattern design for a build, then this. Speechless. "So many HOLES!"

Week 2 - Picks. Lots of picks.

Week 2 Goals - Dig out down to y20 while staying vaguely sane.

Not the most exciting week of my life. Stuck a few haste 2 and speed 2 beacons to cover the bulk of the area I was gonna dig out. Lost count of how many picks I broke/made/repaired. Definitely over 100. Started out with about 1.6mil stone mined on my stats page.

Image

So about 800k stone mined out + granite/andesite/diorite dirt and gravel. Seems about right for the size of area.

Image

Made it down to y20 with 1 day to spare so gave me some time to stock up on books and picks again. Everything went fairly smoothly, no massive ravines yet but there's lava lakes below that could take some time to fill in. Luckily I know a guy with a few spare stacks of gravel.

Week 3 Goals - Get down to y10 layer, tidy up the walls and floor layer when I get there so I can start terraforming and maybe actually building something.
