Raid Calculator

Tue Feb 21, 2012 2:59 am

I just made this quickly for myself but I figured I'd share it in-case anyone else found it useful.

Basically it is a calculator that tells you how much storage you'll get when you put in the RAID mode you are going to be using and the amount of disks included in the array. It supports RAID0, RAID5 and RAID6 (the only RAID modes I'm interested in).

Link: http://renmx.com/raidcalc

I may add all the RAID modes and add a bit more polish to it at a later date if I can be bothered.

Updated this today now supports the following:

JBOD, RAID1, RAID2, RAID3, RAID4 on top of what it supported before which was RAID0, RAID5 and RAID6.

I also added Nested raid modes including 0+1, 1+0, 5+0, 5+1, 6+0 and 6+1

Also now supports 4.5, 5.0 5.5 and 6.0 Terabyte disks and it keeps a little history of the last selection you made so you can more easily play about with the options.

Did some more changes to this. Now supports 150GB, 450GB 600GB and 900GB Disks. I also changed the interface up a little and added feature request / bug report icons in the top right which link to HardOCP which is where I first posted it.

I'm also in discussion with a guy of a home server / small business server website tailored to the types of people that would find a RAID calculator useful and we may integrate it in to his website so that more people can use the calculator. I never expected it to be used that much but looking at the logs its actually somehow become the most popular page on my whole website with 500 hits today alone.

It's kinda funny something I just made for myself for a very specific purpose may actually end up making some revenue. I guess I just shit money.

People building servers Gmod. I personally have just over 70TB of storage in my own server across many RAID Arrays. That is why I wrote this tool in the first place.

RAID10 is on the calculator as RAID1+0 (which is its official name, some manufacturers incorrectly label it as RAID10)
