It could be that he has to do a manual update. If that is the case, heres how I worked it out:

Go to options (when you are about to login) and check in manual mod slection, then you can check what version you want, so you go to the top of the scroll-menu and press the latest update. Tekkit should then automatically update and you should be able to join the server.

Again I had the same problem, but the problem for me was that I had 32-bit Java installed while my operating system was 64-bit. I would recommend that you see what you have and download just that pack (just google 32/64 bit java download as javas automatic download didnt work). Then it should be able to fix it.

If that doesnt work then look up youtube to add shortcuts into the system variables. (tekkit cant find java directory)
