Enderpearls banned?

I am a little confused on why these are banned.
If the server is concerned about people using them to get into others bases why not use Grief prevention and disable the right click of pearls when your within a certain distance of someone else claim... unless your trusted.

Towny already has this feature build in

Also with the staff as active as they are... why not just ban players that abuse them... not punish everyone else for those few.
For me enderpearls are a key item for getting in and out of tight situations... as a good way to travel in the nether.

Because not every build is in a towny-claimed area. Everyone's stuff is protected regardless of whether its built in a claimed area. If you are not in a claimed area, you'll have to report crime to staff and wait till they can fix it. Towny makes it easier for players to protect their own area without having to get help from staff. It lets you be a de facto admin of your own little area on the server.

But why are enderpearls banned? The staff here seem to be very active and regardless of if a person broke through a wall with a tool or ender pearled in.... they would get caught if they stole anything.

Im just confused to why they are disabled. I have never played on a server that banned anything other then TnT in vanilla.

The main reason we've disabled them is because using them allows players to cheat in our Easter Eggs at spawn. Eggs that take several minutes to complete can be done in seconds.

WorldGuard has a way to disable Enderpearls between regions. For example standing in one region and throwing a pearl in to another adjacent region. But it can't disable their use within a single region only between regions.

Due to this we've had to disable Enderpearls server wide. It also has the added benefit of stopping users from using them in PVP, which was another issue we had where people who didn't want to be killed will go into their homes and close the door and people who wanted to kill them would use Enderpearls to glitch past the door. Not so much a concern now with our PVP toggle feature.

And finally being able to get in and out of peoples bases without griefing. Some people believe their chests are secure in their homes behind locked doors, pearls can be used to glitch past closed doors with patience.
