Walking Dead: Derryl, Crazy or not?

I think I spelt his name wrong, but aside from that, I just watched the Walking Dead, and there was this one scene where Derryl wasn't talking at all, and another, in the Country Club, where he continuously smacked a Walker, but not hitting that walker in the head. Let me know your opinions on this :D
(Also correct me if I spelt his name wrong)
