Saving my laptop

Wed Jul 30, 2014 2:53 am

Hey guys,

I'm trying to save my macbook pro. It's been with me for a couple of years but recently it has been restarting a lot and whatnot. So to the point:

I want to upgrade the RAM and the Hard Disk to an SSD however I don't know what would be best recommended for my computer. I'd like some suggestions. Since I now have 2 jobs I may be able to afford the upgrade. So any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Which MacBook Pro is it specifically. If it is restarting a lot it could be a failing GPU which is a flaw of the MacBook Pro's sadly. Even the GPU in my own one has failed. Affected models are currently the 2008 to 2011 models.

Could be that, my Macbook is the mid 2010 model. This one here:

http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/m ... specs.html

The upgrade I had in mind would be this one:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B008LTBJFM/ref ... BOJJ&psc=1

But the combo that appears at the bottom the RAM + the SSD.

However if it's the GPU problems (which could be the case) I could also paste a panic report that I have so many of.

If the Mac keeps crashing it's very likely the GPU that has failed. It's so common. I'd recommend running the hardware test. You'll find a disc marked AHT which came with your Mac. This will be able to test everything including the GPU and tell you exactly if there is a problem.

That RAM you've picked out is perfectly compatible and more RAM will definitely help your Mac out. If you're looking to get an SSD too then I'd recommend the Samsung 840 Evo range. Very reliable, very affordable and very fast.

I'll try to find the disc to do the test, as for the RAM from what Ive been reading I can only max it out to 8GB before the computer crashes because it can't handle more than 8. Thanks for the suggestion on the SSD.

Like I've said, hopefully with the job now and after fixing the car I can buy it. I'll need to concentrate on the laptop because it's my liability.

I'll post the result of the test here once I run it.

Yeah you have a failing GPU. See this part of the text:

"GPU Panic: [<None>] 3 3 7f 0 0 0 0 3 : NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100: CFG 0xffffffff 0xffffffff 0xffffffff, BAR0 0xd2000000 0xffffff80acc48000 0x0a5480a2, D0, "

The crash was caused by an error with the GPU. Definitely run the hardware test disc for confirmation. I would not upgrade anything on that laptop until you get a new logic board.

Is the logic board something that's easy to replace by myself and if so would you know a recommended model that I could get?

You'd need Apple to do it and they charge about $700 USD.

The Logic Board is Apple speak for the Motherboard. And in their laptops everything is soldered. The CPU, GPU, all the side I/O. Depending on the model even your WiFi card and Bluetooth chips may be embedded in it. Heck in the newer Macs even the RAM is soldered to it.

So essentially, it's a very costly part to replace because it is slowly becoming the entire computer on one part and the whole thing has to be replaced.

Sourcing one on ebay etc would be difficult and would likely also suffer from the GPU issue.
